....since I've been to a short track to throw my hard earned money at the local and regional heroes of dirt racing. My god how I've missed it. Short track dirt racing is the purest form of automotive competition ever created. I dropped into New Egypt NJ speedway with my 29 year old son, it's the first time we've been to a dirt track together in 15 years. We were Flemington stalwarts until the asphalt moved in, then making a yearly pilgrimage to William's Grove.

There are few sensoral experiences which will never be translated to television, short track racing has the crackle of the big block exhaust, the color and visual experience and the vibration of the motor in your chest. After a 15 year hiatus I watched Billy Pauch, Doug Hoffman and Frank Cozze finish 3-4-5 in a feature.....the bizarre thing is they were all there the last time I watched a dirt race.

Also in the field were the URC sprint cars. My memories of them made me realize they were no where near as fast or as professional as they are now. I have no idea of the racers, it takes several races to make the attachment, but the show was well worth the price of admission despite a 2 hour rain delay. My son and I were entertained and have another racing memory to share.

God I love the short tracks. It's where the real people race. It's where you can still smell the methanol, the octane in the gas, the funnel cakes and dirt in the air. It's real racing.......still.

USAR Hooters Pro Cup Series championship thread

First off let me start by saying Hello, this is my first post on these boards. I have been I long time lurker, so I feel like I already know some of you. As you can tell by my signature, I am a huge USAR fan, they have the best racing in the world. I have been going to their races for years. This saturday(8/30) I will be making a 8 hour drive to Mansfield to watch the 1st of 4 championship playoff races. I though I could make a thread for the 4 races here. I will be cheering like crazy for Benny Gordon. Him and his spotter , billy farley, are class acts to their fans. I hope benny can win a 2nd championship.

I know this is early, but I thought I should put it up there incase we have any die hard midget fans who haven't seen this event on the map yet. Event is held at Tri City Speedway in Pontoon Beach Illinois about 15 Mins from St. Louis.

Cone On Restarts

I just got back from the midget races at Grundy County Fairgrounds. And, maybe this is done all over, but, it is the first time I saw this. I am 70 years old and don't get out to the races anymore.

At the track, on the restarts, a cone in placed just before the third turn, being 4 turns to the track. This cone is placed near the outside wall. On the restart, the cars must go thru the gap between the cone and the wall. All cars going single file before they go into the turn. What this does is to prevent any cars in toward the middle or back of the field jumping the start. They all have to go into turn 3 single file. After all cars have passed, the cone is yanked off the track by a cord. I should say, that this probably only works for paved tracks, which Grundy County Fairgrounds is.

Well, if you know all about the above item, here is something else. During a heat race of midgets, on the second lap as the cars go by, the flagman is felled. He goes down to the floor on the perch which is out side of the track. The race is red flagged, because of an accident involving 3 cars. The flagman gets up and then goes to the inside of the track to an ambulance at the accident of the 3 cars. He must have been O.K., because he came back and flagged all the races.
